Last night, all across Italy, streets were filled with people to see the procession of Corpus Domini. Congregations from all the churches march with their banners, throwing flower petals on the streets as they go, rosaries in hand and prayers of the Eucharist resounding throughout the city. Next in the procession are the nuns and priests of the city. Finally, the smell and smoke of the incense fill the air. The processional cross comes into view. The Holy Eucharist is about to pass by.
I had the pleasure of witnessing this amazing procession last night. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. As soon as the Eucharist passed by us, we joined in the procession. Surrounded by thousands of people with their families reciting the prayers and singing the hymns, it was impossible not to be overcome by goosebumps! As we made our way to the Cathedral, I glanced up at the balconies above, decorated and ready for the Body of Christ to pass by.
It was a great symbol of discipleship. It was a great reminder that the Body of Christ should not just remain within the walls of the church. We are commanded to take Him with us when we leave. We are commanded to take Him out into the streets - to show His love to all people at all corners of the earth.
It is an amazing gift - the love of Christ. The ultimate sacrifice that offers eternal life to all who will believe...How will they know if we do not show them? If we do not tell them?
It is a great message that we have, the ultimate gift, and a great commission: "to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that [He] has commanded you" (Matt 28: 19, 20)
Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty big task for all of us to accomplish...and we cannot do it by ourselves. We try a lot of times, and get frustrated when others don't listen. So we get angry, judgmental, and self-righteous. Look. Don't get out your bullhorns to go stand on a street corner and condemn the pedestrians passing by...just simply take the Love that He has given you out with you into the streets. To your friends. To your family. To everyone you meet.
Remember that Jesus tells us "I am with you always till the end of the age." He created the world. He saved the world. YOU can't do anything except to decide to do what God has commanded of you to do.
Love. Love all. Serve One.
